One Last Go With Old Rules

We have a sump sea adventure as a farewell

If everything works out the way it’s supposed to, by the end of this week I should have my grubby little hands on the new Necromunda:Warhammer:Skirmish boxset (or is it Skirmish:Necromunda:Warhammer…?) and books to pour over endlessly and compare and contrast with the old. And, if I’m really lucky, I might have enough to say about it that I’ll actually want to write something here.

But, just because the new box is coming, it doesn’t mean the old stuff is garbage. I spent a lot of time and money investing in the soon-to-be-old Necromunda game system. So I invited my good buddy from the Hamburg Necromunda Discord over for an afternoon of gang warfare and burgers. Well… I had burgers. He had a child emergency. So readers may decide who had the better time.

This was a final match up of two gangs that have been warring with each other since the our city’s “Everlasting Campaign” started up. So we’ve been going back and forth, killing each other violently with new and inventive ways since February. And our game on Saturday continued this fine tradition for one last time.

My gang hasn’t had an easy time of it. I think I’ve lost five scummers since we started playing but I had the advantage of my champions, leader, and ambot continuously getting better and better so my gang value was a little bit skewed. As such, there was a relatively large difference between us and he supplemented his gang with a handful of scummers.

The scenario was one I made up on the spot (and one I might write down if pre-built scenarios end up remaining a thing). Mostly because I wanted to play a Sump Sea scenario where people can get blasted off of platforms and then, potentially, get sucked into the muck. It’s always fun for color. So the idea was that there would be three control devices. First gang to activate two and flood/drain the area would be the winner. As I’ve described elsewhere, most scenarios really just boil down to murder-fests, but it’s always nice to have some kind of alternative reason to be there and task to accomplish. (Something I think the new rules will handle with side-job cards.)

Things started rough for me because we decided to use all my beast lairs and there was one right in the path I was taking to go murder some Goliaths. Turns out, it really didn’t like my scummer and, as you can see from the Murder Dice, there wasn’t a lot left of him when it was done slamming his body into any hard surface the tentacle could reach.

Meanwhile. I had thought I’d lined up my leader, the Psyker Sarah for a pretty good run at people only to have missed that my buddy had a pretty clear shot with an incendiary grenade. So I sent in my ambot to assist and clean up some of the Goliath aligned scum only to have him hit by a different grenade. It was grenades all around. Which left us with a scene that looked like this:

As Soundgarden sang, “Dark days…”

In truth, my buddy was having one hell of a game. I would say “on fire” except that it was literally my gang that was on fire and his that was setting them. But this game rewards the brutal, the stupid, and the well timed shot. So it was all worth it. A fitting tribute to a game that had given me hundreds of hours of painting and playing enjoyment.

Oh… and one last murder dice shot… because this is insanity…

A goliath stimmer takes down an Outcast champion with no out of actions but a lot, a LOT, of wounds!

Looking forward to the new box and seeing how we can’t make that version just as over the top and twisted as this one. Thanks for one last fight, Nikita! Should be fun beating each other over the head with some fresh meat.
