Most of what’s been published on spudWorks thus far has been stuff that’s already been completed. I’ve published gangs and soon I’ll publish Blood Bowl teams. But I haven’t really revealed much about what I’m currently working on. I’m still actively involved in the hobby and play regularly as anyone will know who reads my scenario rundowns. But I also paint regularly and frequently put new miniatures together… sometimes just because!
So… today I’m putting out an update about what’s currently on my painting table. I don’t have some lofty ideas about what I’m doing, nor do I expect anyone to learn anything they don’t already know. I’m not an extraordinary painter and I’m not terribly creative when it comes to kitbashing new miniatures. More than anything, I hope that in showing what I’m working on, people who might be stalled currently can get a few ideas or at least a little motivation to pick up a brush again.
So here goes!
I haven’t played Goliath a lot. In fact, I think I’ve only ever played them… twice? But I play a guy in a campaign who plays them a lot and he uses his grenade launcher to devastating effect. So I thought I might build myself one. I had a fresh box of Goliaths dropped at my door a couple of weeks ago and painting the original gang is far enough behind me that I thought it could be fun to paint up another one or two.
And a grenade launcher guy was an obvious choice. Thing was, I wanted him to have a stub gun in his hand. The Goliath kit comes with a stub gun arm, standard, but it’s at a damned weird angle, holding it either like he’s some yo out of Baltimore or seeing something one floor up no one else does. But there’s some kind of Goliath bolt pistol that is at a much more normal angle. So… I did a little weapon swap and liked it much better.
The other thing I wanted was a hand flamer. It’s just fun and very different from pretty much every other gang I’ve got, so why not field a weapon I’ve only ever fielded once before. But I always wanted to use the hammer over the arm pose again because it’s just cool looking! Unfortunately, I already have a guy with the hammer over his shoulder. So… I decided to swap the hammer for a brute cleaver. It was as simple as cutting off the hammer head and attaching the cleaver head. Then, just for good measure, I cut off the bottom and put on a new bottom that had that little ring-thinggy.
That and two different heads and I had two new gangers with unique loadouts. Don’t know when I’ll use them but it’s cool that I have them!
Next up was the real new project I’ve been working on: The Roses of Saint Sydrena. This was a cool idea I had while reading one of the Sororitas books and playing around with Claude. The idea was a simple one, a gang of Escher found a slaughtered Sororitas battle squad somewhere in the underhive and stole their armor. The vestments were all burned away so they replaced the red and black robes with material they had on hand, the loud, multi-colored animal prints Escher are known for! Once they did, they pranced around the underhive, calling each other “sister” and yelling “For the Emperor!” because it was funny.
Only…
Their shots actually seemed to start hitting more often. And they were surviving things that should’ve killed them. And they began to wonder… somewhere along the line… had they become Sororitas?
Real or fake? Pious or frauds…? Who knows but they are doing the Emperors work.
Turns out, it’s a relatively easy kitbash. The Sororitas Dominion squad comes with so many arm options that, with a little creativity, Escher weapons can be made to fit the Sororitas bodies. Then, add some Escher heads and most of the work is done in the paint. And the best thing about painting is that it hides a myriad of sins.
Anyway, I managed to basically paint the whole Death Maiden over the weekend and now I’ve started doing some of the animal print on the juve.
I’ve got them all converted up, so the las gunners are actually the least of the models. I’ve also got a chem thrower and a plasma cannon coming and those will be sweet. Unfortunately, work has been hectic lately… so I don’t know how much time I’ll have to really sit down and paint but these do seem to be moving relatively quickly. So hopefully I can have at least the starting eight woman roster done fairly soon.
