Goliath Meatheads

Sometimes you start with an idea, sometimes you don't

I don’t exactly know why I got myself a Goliath gang. It wasn’t like I had some big idea when I started them. And, like the Escher, I knew I wanted to do some head swaps because I just wasn’t super in love with the table-saw blade stuck in the head thing. I mean, I know they’re supposed to be dumb-dumbs but a little shop safety goes a long way…

Anyway… I bought them, I built them, I stuck different heads on them… I even did that with the Forge World champ because, it just so happened, he had the load-out I wanted to give my leader (and, yeah, he had a cape).

And then they sat in the box for well over a year because I had no idea how I wanted to paint them. I knew I kinda liked the black pants, red stripe thing. But the breast plate? The shins? Eh… call me un-inspired!

Then one day, I pulled out a ganger and, for lack of anything better to do, I painted hazard stripes all over him. Because… Necromunda, bay-be! And it just kind of clicked. Now I knew what to do. Hazard stripes, all day long.

I’ll be honest, they’re not my favorite gang. In truth, I’ve never even put them on the table! I have yet to find that opportunity. But I do like looking at them from time to time. I like how big they are and it was fun to paint their skin and faces.

Funny side story: I showed the guy with the hammer to my wife and she asked me, “Why’s the hammer blue?” And I said, “Because it’s a power hammer.” And she said, “Will everyone know that?” And I said… “Yes, they will!”

Sure enough, I’m on the elliptical machine, because I’m old now and it turns out in your late-40’s you don’t lose weight drinking bourbon any more, and I’m watching YouTube and a guy is painting and she watches for a minute and then says, “Is that a power sword?”

To which, I had to stop, astonished because she doesn’t give a shit about my hobby. And I said, “Wow, babe! How did you know?”

“It’s blue,” she said. “Aren’t blue things power whatevers?”

Power whatevers… For half a second I was thinking it might have sparked an interest. But it did not. She just remembered something I said like a year before… Which, I guess, is something in itself!
