Murder Dice

It's not just how they died, it's how bad they died

There’s a buddy of mine on the Hamburg Necromunda Discord server (hit me up if you’re in town and want to join), who either came up with or popularized the idea of “murder shots”, basically, taking a pic of the injury dice that were rolled that took a fighter out of action.

First, I want to make a game play argument here: In Blood Bowl, your opponent always makes the injury roll. And the specific, stated reason for this, is that you shouldn’t be forced to injure your own players. In Necromunda, the rules state that the fighter’s player makes the injury rolls. I don’t think this should be the case! For the same reason as with Blood Bowl.

So, when I play a game and my fighter has reached zero wounds and beyond, I always make my opponent roll the injury dice. And, boy oh boy, do you get some interesting shots some time.

Since I’ve been doing this for a little while, I’ve collected a bunch of shots, so here are some for your enjoyment:

I admit, sometimes you have to get a little arty with them. And turn the dice facing that actually came up toward the camera rather than leave it facing up just so you can capture the scene. That said, it’s kind of hilarious.

For some reason, I’ve become a little bit of a brand ambassador for Necromunda in Hamburg. Not officially. I get nothing from GW. But I do run the Discord and I fucking love the game. It’s just so wild… Anyway, with my unofficial role, I have people new to the game regularly sent my way and I offer up cheese burgers and a demo game.

And, while I love Murder Dice, I also hesitate to snap photos of them when playing with a new person as I feel like they might misinterpret it as me trying to make a fool of them. What I do do, though, is that if they take out one of my guys first, I line up the dice for them and encourage them to take a picture. This way they can get into the idea without me rubbing their noses into it. So far, it’s been pretty successful and I do feel like our gaming community around Necromunda is on a slow march up in numbers!

And it does serve as a good reminder to take action shots of a game. I will admit that I’m frequently the worst at it. I’m in the game and never snap a photo until it’s all over… So this is one way to remember to do so. Hot tip!
